Civil Research Facilities

Research Facilities

The Civil Engineering Research Lab Facilities are designed to foster innovation, research, and practical learning in the field of civil engineering. These facilities serve as advanced platforms that integrate academic knowledge with industry-driven applications, focusing on sustainable construction practices, material innovation, digital technologies, and smart infrastructure solutions.

The Department houses three major Centres of Excellence, each offering unique opportunities for research, consultancy, and student engagement in modern civil engineering practices.

1. Centre of Excellence on Sustainable Construction Materials and Practices

The Centre of Excellence on Sustainable Construction Materials and Practices, established in collaboration with UltraTech Cement, aims to promote green and eco-friendly building technologies. This Centre focuses on developing innovative construction materials that enhance durability, reduce carbon footprint, and align with sustainable development goals (SDGs).

Key Focus Areas:

  • Research on blended cements, geopolymer concrete, and supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs).
  • Testing and evaluation of high-performance concrete, recycled aggregates, and industrial by-products in construction.
  • Implementation of energy-efficient construction techniques and low-carbon material practices.
  • Organizing industry workshops, training programs, and live demonstrations on sustainable construction.

Facilities and Equipment:

  • Concrete and material testing equipment (Compressive Testing Machine, Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity Tester, etc.)
  • Mix design and curing chambers for experimental research.
  • Sustainability analysis tools and software for lifecycle assessment (LCA).

Outcomes:

  • Promotion of eco-friendly construction practices in academia and industry.
  • Student involvement in real-time research projects and internships with UltraTech Cement.
  • Contribution to publications and consultancy in sustainable construction technologies.

2. Centre for Smart Design and Structural Systems

The Centre for Smart Design and Structural Systems is a dedicated advanced learning and research facility aimed at strengthening competencies in modern structural engineering, design automation, and digital construction practices. The Centre provides a platform where students and researchers can develop industry-ready skills using globally recognized structural design and modelling software.

Key Focus Areas:

  • Structural analysis and design of buildings and infrastructure using advanced software.
  • Building Information Modelling (BIM) for integrated project development.
  • Development of digital workflows for smart and sustainable structural systems.
  • Virtual modelling, simulation, and optimization of structural components.
  • Exposure to modern design methodologies followed in industry-standard projects.

Facilities and Equipment:

  • Revit – BIM-based 3D modelling, visualization, and coordination.
  • ETABS – Building analysis and design for RC and steel structures.
  • STAAD.Pro – Structural design for buildings, towers, bridges, and industrial structures.
  • AutoCAD – Drafting, detailing, and preparation of construction drawings.
  • Supportive tools: BIM collaboration platforms, MS Project, etc.

Outcomes:

  • Hands-on proficiency in industry-demand structural design tools.
  • Enhanced ability to model, analyze, simulate, and optimize structures.
  • Improved employability through software certifications and practical design training.
  • Student involvement in real-time design assignments, internships, and industry-linked projects.
  • Capability to execute complete BIM-based workflows for modern construction projects.

3. Centre of Excellence on Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR)

The Centre of Excellence on AR and VR provides an immersive digital environment for visualizing and simulating complex civil engineering concepts, construction sites, and infrastructure models. It bridges the gap between theoretical learning and practical application by allowing students to interact with 3D models in real-time virtual settings.

Key Focus Areas:

  • Development of AR/VR-based simulations for structural analysis, construction planning, and safety training.
  • Integration of Building Information Modeling (BIM) with immersive visualization tools.
  • Virtual walkthroughs of construction projects for enhanced design interpretation.
  • Application of mixed reality tools for skill-based learning and training modules.

Facilities and Equipment:

  • Advanced AR/VR headsets and motion sensors.
  • High-end workstations for 3D modeling, rendering, and real-time visualization.
  • BIM-integrated simulation software (Autodesk Revit, Unity, Unreal Engine, etc.).

Outcomes:

  • Enhanced experiential learning for students and faculty.
  • Development of innovative visualization tools for design presentation and project review.
  • Collaborative research and partnerships with tech-driven construction firms.
